'Never Had a Bad Day' | Daily Drawing #257
If anyone ever tells you this, they're a goddamned liar.
Today was, in fact, not a great day. On top of car, tax and technology issues, there was also an emergency trip to the vet.
But, we're all good and will live to fight another day.
Tools: Freeform sketch on paper, inked and scanned. Composite in Photoshop.
'Cut the Sides, Don't Touch the Back!' | Daily Drawing #256
A tribute to the greatest American hairstyle.
The hairstyle has been around forever in one form or another but legend has it the term 'mullet' was coined and popularized by the Beastie Boys in their song "Mullet Head" (Ill Communication):
You're coming off like you're Van Damme
You've got Kenny G, in your Trans Am
You've got names like Billy Ray
Now you sing 'Hip Hop Hooray'
Put your Oakley's, stone wash on
Watching MTV and you watch on
And #1 on the side and don't touch the back
And #6 on the top and don't cut it wack, Jack
Mullet head, don't touch the back
Cut the sides, don't touch the back
'I'm Not Rich But I'm Doing OK' | Daily Drawing #255.
I'll just keep repeating this phrase as I file my taxes.
Tools: I did the base lettering with a Mary Le Plume II Brush Pen. I then traced over the brush marks with pencil, correcting and accentuating stroke lines. Then I scanned the tracing paper and pulled it into Photoshop for further correction and adjustment. I printed out the traced lines at a larger size, and traced over them with the Sakura Pigma Sensei pens. Scanned, cleaned up, then vector traced in Illustrator.
This sounds like a lot of steps - but because the style is so loose, the entire process took me less than an hour. I actually spend more time cleaning up the file and deciding on colors (which I'm still not sold on, I'm going to make other versions of this).
'Decide. Commit. Succeed.' | Daily Drawing #253
You'll never be successful if you don't decide what you really want. And no success ever comes without commitment.
Tools: The script was done with a Marvy LePlume II Brush Marker I received in this months Art Snacks (nice pen, funny name), then traced and touched up with my Staedler Pigment Liners.
'Play Ball!' | Daily Drawing #251
Today is Opening Day for Phillies baseball. I think we can finally say Winter is officially over.
Tools: Flat brush with Liquitex Acrylic on paper. The painted letters were shot with my phone then adjusted in Photoshop. I intentionally overexposed the image to show the rough strokes. Photo was taken Opening Day 2014.

'Two Hundred' | Daily Drawing #200
Today's posting is my 200th 'Daily Drawing' post. It's been an interesting experiment. Looking back I can see the progression in my work. It hasn't been easy, not all of it has been good, and I've certainly 'learned by doing' along the way.
It's hard to put something out there practically every day, especially when you've got other things competing for your time. But it's important to keep putting it out there, even when you don't think it's good enough. Because once you start getting better, your 'good enough' just isn't enough, and you raise the bar.
The reality is you'll never be as good as you want to be. There's always going to be that next guy who you think is better. The most you can do is keep producing, keep honing your skills, keep practicing your craft. Put in the hours.
And one day you'll realize there's someone out there who wants to be as good as you.
