Nothing like a good doomscrolling session to remind you that the world is on fire, but hey, at least your thumbs are getting a workout
My Holiday Emoji
My Holiday Emoji - Daily Drawing 583
I've never been a 'Christmas' person
Sure, when I was a kid, but life was different back then. As an adult, the holiday season lost its luster. The commercialism, the pressure to buy gifts, and the constant barrage of awful holiday music is maddening.
I do like the lights and some of the festivities, like the German Christmas Markets (Christkindlmarkt), and some of the holiday parties.
But this time of year I’m more focused on winding down and planning the coming year. Rather than getting caught up in the holiday frenzy, I prefer to use this time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the future.
The slower pace allows me to recharge and focus on what truly matters. While I may not embrace all aspects of the traditional Christmas spirit, I find fulfillment in my version of the season - one that prioritizes personal growth, quality time with loved ones, and quiet moments of introspection.
To the Moon!
'To the Moon!' Daily Drawing 563
A quick illustration I knocked out on Sunday morning while watching soccer. I vowed to get back to drawing more, but I often have that creative block of what to draw. As I started doodling, a rocket ship appeared on the page, and I decided to expand on it.
I painted myself into a corner on this one: having been out of practice in Procreate, I did everything on one layer - even the color drops - which left me no wiggle room to move elements or get crazy with shading.
Out of Office...Forever
‘Out of Office...Forever’ Daily Drawing #543.
I’ve been working from home for over 20 years. I like to say that I’ve been training most of my life for this.

Ask anyone that knows me that the thing I hate most is being cold.
I welcome that yellow fireball in the sky and the warmth it will bring to the East Coast this week.

‘2021’ Daily drawing #542
I sketched this one out over the holiday break, finally got around to illustrating it.
True Love Will Find You in the End
I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Daniel Johnston, the prolific but troubled lo-fi singer-songwriter and artist from Austin, Texas. I first became aware of his music back in the 90’s (I knew a ton about the music industry back then, not so much anymore…).
There was always something pure and sweet but also painful about his music. He’d struggled for years with mental health issues, but had a devoted following, including some big names like Kurt Cobain and Tom Waits. Later in life he dealt with health issues, but had a ‘farewell tour’ in 2017 with the guys from Wilco, Built to Spill, and Fugazi serving as his backing band.
Johnson was prolific to the end, telling the New York Times, “I can’t stop writing. If I did stop, there could be nothing. Maybe everything would stop. So I won’t stop. I’ve got to keep it going.”

Loud, Fast and Sloppy

I’m still having a tough time with this one. During the weekend I found myself reading old articles and watching clips of Anthony. I’d get bummed out and try and forget about it, then I’d see but yet another picture or a link and go, “Oh, fuck.”
This quote from from an run-and-gun style promo he shot for what I’m guessing is an early season of ‘No Reservations’. It’s classic Bourdain: punk rock t-shirt, round sunglasses, standing from of CBGBs. (search Anthony Bourdain “CBGB’s” on Vimeo for the clip.)
