“ I Am Not a Cat” | Daily Drawing #539
A lawyer using Zoom had to let a judge know that he wasn’t a cat after inadvertently activating a face filter.
“I am here, live. I am not a cat”
Hilarity ensues.

The original drawing of this phrase goes way back to the early days of my Daily Drawing series. Recently someone reached out to me to ask about getting the lettering done as a vinyl transfer, and once I looked at the original drawing I couldn’t resist redoing the piece.
‘Better Days Ahead’ | Daily Drawing #532
It’s been quite a year.
I haven’t posted on here since March of 2020. I’d pretty much stopped doing the daily drawings, and for a good long while just didn’t draw anything at all.
I put this illustration together in May of last year. I posted it to Instagram and that was about it. I just didn’t have it in me to post here or to write anything,
It wasn’t for lack of time, since, like everyone else, I was locked down in the house.
I believe now that my ‘coping mechanism’ was to just throw myself into work. I’m lucky that I’m in a sector that experienced growth instead of decline during the early days of the pandemic. Once we found our footing and realized that we’d make it through, we went full throttle. And that’s pretty much all I’ve been doing.
Sleep, eat, work, eat, sleep.
I definitely lost a step in the last year. And not creating things for myself really started to wear on me - but like any creative will tell you - once you get into that rut, it’s hard to dig out.
It’s now February of 2021, almost one year of dealing with the pandemic. We’re also in the death grips of Winter on the east coast of the US, which isn’t helping the mood around here.
But, spring is on the horizon. There’s a vaccine (a true scientific miracle, if you ask me). It’s going to take some time. things won’t change overnight. But I try to be optimistic, take the time to make something, and look for the better days ahead.
I’m still amazed at the number of people who are treating this pandemic like it’s a snow day.
14 days of social distancing and this thing would be a bad memory.
But no, we’re a selfish society, my family and friends health be damned. This isn’t ending anytime soon. Stay the fuck in the house or we’ll all be locked up until the fall.

I was never (ever) a Steely Dan fan, but I always thought this was a kickass lyric.
Also, I may or may not have had some bad ‘weekends at the college’.

I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Daniel Johnston, the prolific but troubled lo-fi singer-songwriter and artist from Austin, Texas. I first became aware of his music back in the 90’s (I knew a ton about the music industry back then, not so much anymore…).
There was always something pure and sweet but also painful about his music. He’d struggled for years with mental health issues, but had a devoted following, including some big names like Kurt Cobain and Tom Waits. Later in life he dealt with health issues, but had a ‘farewell tour’ in 2017 with the guys from Wilco, Built to Spill, and Fugazi serving as his backing band.
Johnson was prolific to the end, telling the New York Times, “I can’t stop writing. If I did stop, there could be nothing. Maybe everything would stop. So I won’t stop. I’ve got to keep it going.”

'Air' | Daily Drawing 463.
When I was a punk kid, I practically lived on my skateboard.
It wasn’t just a means of transportation - it was an obsession.
When I wasn’t skating, or thinkin’ bout skating, or drawing people skateboarding, I would pore over copies of skate and surf magazines.
As a poor kid from Philly, the ultimate dream was to be one of those lucky bastards in the magazines out in Cali or Florida or Hawaii that could skate and surf 365 days a year.
I never get to California (only to visit), but I sure could draw a mean frontside air.
I drew this the other night and the drawing muscle memory kicked right in.
This whole ilo took not more than 30 minutes.
