Never Had a Bad Day
'Never Had a Bad Day' | Daily Drawing #257
If anyone ever tells you this, they're a goddamned liar.
Today was, in fact, not a great day. On top of car, tax and technology issues, there was also an emergency trip to the vet.
But, we're all good and will live to fight another day.
Tools: Freeform sketch on paper, inked and scanned. Composite in Photoshop.
Cut the sides, don't touch the back!
'Cut the Sides, Don't Touch the Back!' | Daily Drawing #256
A tribute to the greatest American hairstyle.
The hairstyle has been around forever in one form or another but legend has it the term 'mullet' was coined and popularized by the Beastie Boys in their song "Mullet Head" (Ill Communication):
You're coming off like you're Van Damme
You've got Kenny G, in your Trans Am
You've got names like Billy Ray
Now you sing 'Hip Hop Hooray'
Put your Oakley's, stone wash on
Watching MTV and you watch on
And #1 on the side and don't touch the back
And #6 on the top and don't cut it wack, Jack
Mullet head, don't touch the back
Cut the sides, don't touch the back
I'm Not Rich But I'm Doing OK
'I'm Not Rich But I'm Doing OK' | Daily Drawing #255.
I'll just keep repeating this phrase as I file my taxes.
Tools: I did the base lettering with a Mary Le Plume II Brush Pen. I then traced over the brush marks with pencil, correcting and accentuating stroke lines. Then I scanned the tracing paper and pulled it into Photoshop for further correction and adjustment. I printed out the traced lines at a larger size, and traced over them with the Sakura Pigma Sensei pens. Scanned, cleaned up, then vector traced in Illustrator.
This sounds like a lot of steps - but because the style is so loose, the entire process took me less than an hour. I actually spend more time cleaning up the file and deciding on colors (which I'm still not sold on, I'm going to make other versions of this).
Lust for Life
'Lust for Life' | Daily Drawing #254
Tools: I started with large, loose sketches. The sketches were inked with a set of Sakura Pigma Sensei markers, which are actually sold as Manga drawing pens. This set has fine nibs as well as a large 1.00mm nib which made it easy to fill in large areas. Scanned then vector traced in Illustrator.
